The Complications
Schiller Park's housing stock runs a touch older than the broader service area median of 1967 - most of this town went up around 1963, which puts a lot of doors here on hardware that predates the standard extension-spring drum-and-cable setup you'd find on a house built in the 1970s or later. We come over from Norridge, about two miles away, and the first thing we check isn't the cable itself but what it's wrapped around. A lot of these original drums were sized for a thinner cable gauge than what's sold off the shelf today, and if a past repair put the wrong cable on the wrong drum, it frays again faster than it should.
The other complication is the cold. This part of Illinois sits in a moderate-cold climate band, and galvanized cable strands that have been flexing through thirty-plus winters get brittle at the clamp end before they look worn anywhere else. That's usually where we find the break - not in the middle of the cable, but right where it wraps the bottom bracket. On a house this age, we're also checking the bottom brackets themselves, since they take the load differently than the stamped brackets on newer doors.
